Georgia State Representative Park Cannon Will Not Face Charges

Video from NBC News/Youtube

As reported today by the Black News Channel, Georgia State Representative Park Cannon will not face any charges in relation to her knocking on Georgia Governor's door as he signed a bill (SB 202) which restricts voting rights in the state of Georgia.

According this CNN article, the bill in question is set to impose these restrictions among other things:

  • Limits access to voting drop boxes

  • Makes giving food or drinks to voters a misdemeanor crime

  • Allows for unlimited challenges to voter registrations and eligibility

  • Sets up a fraud hotline

  • Requires counties to keep counting ballots without a break

You might remember Park Cannon, she was the woman who was carried out of the Georgia State Capitol by two officers after she knocked on the door. Governor Kemp was signing a new bill that will set new voting rules in the state of Georgia which many say is very restrictive and echoes the era of Jim Crow in the 1900's. These new voting laws are based on the "Big Lie" from the 2020 Presidential election with the claim of voting fraud from Trump and his supporters.

Cannon says she was only trying to get into the room to witness the bill signing as it seems to have been done privately outside the public's view. Due to Cannon's attempt to "crash" the bill signing, she was arrested and possibly could face up to 8 years in jail. According to BNC, the Fulton County District Attorney has deemed the case closed as they have reviewed the evidence and decided not to proceed.

I could not imagine that a legislator would be arrested and charged and possibly jailed for knocking on a door. The optics of this was terrible and despite Ms. Cannon being rightfully cleared, this entire situation has left a bad taste but then again I don't think anyone is surprised about the way the Georgia Governor is running things.
